A Day in the Life

The final track on Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Here is the (official) video.

And here George Martin talks about the recording of the track.

The story behind the song?
Well... A Day in the Life was really two songs - John's and Paul's - joined together. It all started when Paul read a story in the paper about a posho friend of his who had died in a car accident.

That's him over on the left, Tara Browne.

But he didn't really blow his mind out in the car.

That was John's idea. Here's one summary of what it was all about. It seems the song wasn't really about drugs at all. Well not totally. But maybe it was... a bit.

But who better to talk us through it than Lennon and McCartney themselves? On the Apple Corp website you can find out what John and Paul were really on about.
